How to choose grow lights for seedlings

Compare coverage, mounting, dimming, and usable shelf space before choosing a light for an indoor seedling setup.

A grow light should be selected for the plants and area it will illuminate. A fixture’s headline wattage or a photograph of a lush shelf does not show whether your outer tray cells will receive suitable light. Begin with a measured growing footprint.

Compare usable coverage

Look for manufacturer guidance about coverage and hanging distance for seedlings. Check whether the figures describe the full tray area or a small central section. A long shelf may be easier to illuminate with a fixture shape that follows the tray layout.

Check adjustment and mounting

Plants grow taller, and different crops may share the same shelf. Choose a setup that can be adjusted safely without improvised supports. Review electrical requirements, moisture exposure guidance, and clearance instructions. Make sure a timer is compatible with the fixture if you intend to use one.

Buy for the actual batch

A large high-output fixture can be unnecessary for a handful of starts, while a tiny decorative lamp may leave a tray unevenly lit. Compare total setup cost, including mounting and replacements, rather than the fixture price alone. This guide describes selection criteria and does not rank products from hands-on testing.

  • Measure the tray footprint before shopping.
  • Check edge coverage as well as center output.
  • Leave room for the largest indoor plant stage.
YOUR NEXT SMALL STEP

Use your planned crop quantities to estimate the lighted area. Choose a fixture only after deciding how many potted-up plants must fit beneath it.
